Mojacar

Mojacar is a typically Spanish old village. Situated high up on a hillside, surrounded by mountains, the views are quite amazing. The properties here are whitewashed and the streets are cobbled and windy and so typically Spanish.

Historically it has many influences including the those of the Greeks and the Moors from the eighth century.

There are many cultures that have left there influences on Mojacar and that is why many writers and painters come here to live.

Spanish locals are very friendly and there are many good restaurants to be found here.

There are a number of boutique type shops also that are worth mentioning.

There are two markets that are held in Mojacar town every week they start at nine in the morning and finish at two in the afternoon. One is the local flee market, a must see if you are visiting.

Places of interest in Mojacar old town:

• (la fuenta) where women still today wash their clothes with their feet. The water is natural from the mountain springs and is said to have flowed here since the Roman times.
• Walk up to the ancient Castillo viewing gallery
• The Santa Maria parish church
• Casa del Torrein (the old customs house)
• The Plaza Nueva has fabulous views of the surrounding landscape
• The original main entrance to the town since Moorish times, the Puerta de la Ciudad is an ornate arch featuring the town arms

The weather is great all year round like most parts of Almeria, it has over 300 days of sunshine all year and average temperatures in the summer are around 23 degrees.
